In the 17th century, Queen Christina abdicated her Swedish Lutheran throne and migrated to Rome, capital of the Catholic gilded Baroque. She inaugurated a salon of Arcadians, a group of poets and musicians devoted to a reformed poetry and a bucolic ideal. In her own garden, and after her death, in the gardens of great patrons, the Arcadians would gather to discuss, recite, and listen to cantatas and sonatas of Stradella, Corelli, Scarlatti and Handel. Our January program takes you to a meeting of those Roman would-be shepherds.

Queen Christina was the galvanizing force behind a collection of poets and musicians called the Arcadians. With a focus on bucolic and the hearts of shepherds and shepherdesses, Stradella, Corelli, Scarlatti, and Handel enjoyed the patronage and the respect of Rome's most important patrons and poets. This program brings an evening in Roman Arcadian gardens of the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
