Rembrandt van Rijn. Jeremiah Lamenting the Destruction of Jerusalem. 1630.

Rembrandt van Rijn. Jeremiah Lamenting the Destruction of Jerusalem. 1630.

Francois Couperin, a man of the court and worldly sophistication, wrote his Leçons de Tenebres for a convent and composed the most heartfelt, expressive readings of the Lamentations of Jeremiah.  Henry Purcell was a man of the theater and “took many a bosey,” yet his spiritual songs and motets touch all of us with their longing for forgiveness, for salvation, for some way to live with our human imperfections. Four Nations’ cloister garden concert offers heartfelt expressions of hope, faith, penance, and grace through music.
