Joseph Thalken, piano

Joseph Thalken works in New York City as a composer, pianist, arranger and conductor. As a composer, he has received funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and Meet The Composer for two chamber orchestra works. He recently received the Commendation Award from the Gilbert & Gonzalez-Falla Theater Foundation and the Constance Klinsky Award for excellence in writing for the musical theater, both awards for his work on Was, a new musical written with Barry Kleinbort which was produced in a workshop directed by Tina Landau at Lincoln Center Theater last December.

Mr. Thalken is also writing the new musical Harold and Maude with Tom Jones. He contributed original music for Blake Edward’s Big Rosemary and was the Broadway conductor for Victor/Victoria and the associate conductor for the off-Broadway production of Stephen Sondheim’s Putting It Together, both starring Julie Andrews.

Before moving to New York, he spent several years coaching and conducting opera, operetta and musicals in Zurich, Switzerland and Aachen, Germany. He has worked with Polly Bergen, Liza Minnelli, Bernadette Peters, Faith Prince, B.J. Ward, Kristin Chenoweth, Barry Manilow, Howard McGillin, Elizabeth Futral, Catherine Malfitano and Joshua Bell, and can be heard as a pianist on over a dozen original cast albums, including the recently released Tip Toes and Ziegfeld Follies of 1936. He was a participant in the ASCAP and BMI Musical Theater Workshop and is a graduate of Northwestern University.
